Hey! My name is Rachel and I love art. It’s as simple as that. I also love beautiful things. Beautiful things bring me joy: a sunset, my children, or just a bright pop of color. And sometimes, as life has shown me, beautiful things can also exist in the ugly, the difficult, and the truly painful things of life.
What has my life looked like? In 1989, I took a preschool assessment test and my highest score came in the art section. My mom, and biggest fan, wrote “maybe she’ll be an artist” on it and I haven’t looked back.
I graduated from Concordia University Ann Arbor with my degree in Art Education with a Painting Emphasis. From there I taught art in Little Rock, Arkansas, where I realized art was actually my second passion; my first passion was people. Fast forward to my eventual return to work at my alma mater, marriage, children… all the while trying to fit art in whenever I could.
Life changed for me in 2014 when my mom’s cancer returned. For the next two years I was her biggest fan and walked alongside her in her battle until she found peace in the arms of her Savior. Losing her was heartbreaking. But even in my loss, I recognized love. Alongside tears, I received comfort. And in my weakest, loneliest, worst moments- that’s when I felt God’s presence and strength; the same strength my mom and her faith showed up to her last breaths. All beautiful things.
I’m now in St. Louis and hoping to once again bring my top two passions together in creating more opportunities to pause, reflect, and connect to the beauty that all of life has to show. I believe when we do this, we ourselves grow.
So let’s reflect. Let’s make more beautiful things.
